REPERTORY/ COMPOSITION WORKSHOP with Samir Calixto
“LOOSING PARADISE – MOVEMENTS BEYOND HEAVEN AND HELL”
During this workshop the choreographer will focus on the main creative elements behind his latest production PARADISE LOST, based on John Milton’s epic poem.
In the making of Calixto’s work the performers are engaged at their fullest physical, mental and emotionally while diving completely into a profound universe where inner impulses and strong physicality meet.
To take a glimpse at it, the participants on this workshop will be led to explore unconventional physical textures by altering their mind-sets throughout a series of intensive exercises. From there, they will investigate how some of the key themes extracted from Milton’s book can have a strong influence over the creation of unique and personal movement material. At last, they will be guided to collect these experiences and apply them on some of the piece’s original material.

SAMIR CALIXTO – RESUME
Samir Calixto was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1978. Before embracing the dance career he followed other paths on performing arts. At the early age of 14 he was already involved with theatre groups as a performer, touring around his country while his interest in other art fields grew due his contact with inspiring figures along his way. At the age of 17 he officially got his professional status as an actor. In a later stage, on the search for a deeper understanding of his art making, he received his education in different art disciplines. These studies included drama at EAD (Dramatic Art School) on São Paulo University and classical singing at the Conservatory of São Paulo City. In the dance field, he gained much of his education as an autodidact, exploring different techniques in small studios around, supported by many great artists he had contact with. For his dance solo debut Eros in 1999 he won the first prize at Nascente/ Abril Festival. From this moment on, Samir was involved with multidisciplinary projects connected to his university years as well as a guest artist in outside projects.
While moving to Europe in 2004 – one year after his graduation – Samir made the definitive switch to the dance career, getting in touch with the rich Dutch and European dance scene, meeting important figures who would be decisive on his future steps. Establishing then his freelancing status as a dancer, he had in 2005 his solo “Wash Me Up” placed as a finalist at the Best Dance Solo Competition in Leipzig (coordinated by Alain Platel). Since then Samir has worked in productions by Korzo Theatre, Danswerkplaats Amsterdam and others as a freelancer. For the last years Samir has mainly developed his own works, establishing himself as one of the upcoming chroreographers in The Netherlands. Between his creations are „Grondzaken‟ (2007), in collaboration with the visual artist Wilma Marijnissen, „Beating Hollow‟ (2009) – performance winner of the second prize on the Jur Naessens Prijs – and Névé (Winterreise- Part 1) for Korzo Productions His full evening programme Winterreise Tetralogy had its premiére during the 2012 edition of the prestigious Holland Dance Festival, becoming one of the most acclaimed performances in the festival. In 2013 his choreography 4 Seasons was nominated for a ZWAAN – the most prestigious Dutch prize for dance – as one of the most impressive performances in that year. Calixto’s latest tour experiences include performances in festivals and theatres in Holland, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Senegal, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Canary Islands and Norway.
